Culver City Lions Proud Activities

A Glorious Past and Future

by Lion Eileen Blumin

We have had a glorious past history starting with Lion Harry Culver, Founder of Culver City, as one of our 37 Charter Members.  Since 1923, we have had many city dignitaries and civic leaders within our membership.  Here is just one example:

In 1951, Lion Dr. Keith Criswell started an original program, The Culver City Lions Club Eyesight Conservation Clinic.   This first of its kind clinic, in any community, continues to this day.  Our clinic has received international acclaim and has served as a model for other Lions Clubs to follow.  Among the more than 100,000 Culver City school children screened, there are those exceptional young citizens whose eyesight was literally saved by the Culver City Lions Club.

Our Club Sponsored & Supported
Charitable Programs

EYE SCREENING:  Since 1951, we have annually checked the eyes of Culver City elementary school children.  Those who need care are referred to local Optometrists at no cost to the families.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES: We support clinical services to Culver City Elementary School students who are physically and emotionally abused.

SCHOLARSHIPS: We participate in the community effort to fund scholarships to Culver City High School seniors to assist them in attaining a college education.  We also fund scholarships for the Culver City Adult School.

THANKSGIVING: We sponsor and serve the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon at the Culver City Senior Center.

REGIONAL YOUTH CAMP: We helped to build the Lions Summer Camp at Teresita Pines in Wrightwood, CA, for physically handicapped and blind children.

LIONS YOUTH EXCHANGE:
Our club sends qualifying Culver City youths all over the world so that they can participate in this wonderful & educational program.
Every year since 1961, young people have participated in the Lions International Youth Exchange Program. The goal of the program is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.  Unlike other exchange programs, the Lions International Youth Exchange Program is not conducted for tourism, education, or employment. Instead, it is a unique cultural learning opportunity. Participants of the Lions International Youth Exchange Program must:- be between the ages of 15 and 21;
- be sponsored by a Lions club;
- have a basic knowledge of the language of the host country;
- be suitable to represent their community, Lions club, and country;
- be willing to accept the customs of another culture.

OTHER LIONS CAUSES: The Junior Blind, City of Hope Cancer Research Hospital, Lions Low Vision Aids Program (L.O.V.E.) and Canine Companions.
